|Robert H. Kennedy, an ophthalmic surgeon and a 20-year resident of Arlington, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2007, while running a 5K in Key Largo, Fla., at the age of 53.
Funeral: 4 p.m. Friday at All Saints Lutheran Church in Arlington. Visitation: The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Moore Funeral Home-Bowen Chapel.
Memorials: American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery or American Heart Association.
Dr. Kennedy attended Mayo Medical School and completed a residency in ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic and a fellowship in ophthalmic plastic surgery at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. In addition, he graduated as valedictorian of the executive MBA program at Southern Methodist University and held a Ph.D. degree in epidemiology from the University of Minnesota. He was a faculty member at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas prior to co-founding North Texas Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery with Mark Alford, M.D.
Dr. Kennedy was an airline pilot with an instrument rating and flight instructor certificate. He also served in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a commander and head, Department of Ophthalmology, Fleet Hospital.
Dr. Kennedy was an associate examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology and had written many articles for publication in medical journals. He was president of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Kennedy.
Survivors: Wife, Margaret A. Kennedy; sons, Peter J. Kennedy of Florence, S.C., and David R. Kennedy of Sunnyvale, Calif.; daughters, Beth M. Kennedy Gransee and husband, David, of Kasson, Minn., and Erin S. Kennedy Eldred and husband, Steve, of Arlington; parents, Harley and Mildred Kennedy of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; sisters, Jane Kennedy Krawisz and husband, Bruce, of Marshfield, Wis., and Barbara Kennedy of St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
